Wow, my own little space to write in! Prepare to be bored!
I guess I should start by saying that I’m the Brit of the trio, and therefore you can safely assume I’m the hilarious one.
So, erm… where do I start? Do you need to know I’m bald and a little overweight? no probably not, I wont mention that. That I once got banned from a kid’s bouncy castle? Nope, probably don’t need to mention that either. Plus there’s the legal issues still outstanding there. My Indonesian sausage collection? Oh right – films!
Well, having been oblivious to the world beyond Spielberg and co for many years, I have spent the last year of my life trying to feed my newfound love for cinema throughout the ages. You will probably find my focus is on classic, or more obscure cinema, but I can think of no other phrase that sums up my movie tastes better than “a mixed bag”.
While a year or so ago I would have instantly shouted 2001! if someone had asked me my favourite movie, nowadays I don’t think I could answer that question with any certainty. While I still have a love for Kubrick, he has to fight for my love against early European cinema, such as the films of Carl Th. Dreyer, Fritz Lang, and a special fondness for everything Murnau. Coupled with a passion for Asian cinema, from the likes of Teshigahara, Kaneto Shindo, Kurosawa, Ozu, and more recently Takashi Miike and Wong Kar Wei, to say I now have broader tastes would be an understatement. Not forgetting the Russian cinema. Oh and the cult B-movies. And the 50s monster movies. And the Italian neo-realistic films. And the musicals… and the Monty Python…….. you get the point. What I lack in focus, I hopefully gain in enthusiasm.
But I cannot forget my roots, and as such I still adore 80s cheesefests, a bit of the old Spielberg magic, blinking lights sci-fi, puppet horror, ZAZ spoofs and so on.
So erm… that kind of sums it up I suppose. Eclectic would be a decent word to use. I will try to document to the best of my limited writing skills my progression through my continued discovery of film history and the little-known, and I hope I can make it vaguely informative or at least a little funny sometimes.
As I am reasonably obsessive about my DVD collection, you probably will not find me writing too much about the latest cinema releases. That’s castaka’s job !
Must send a shout out to whatthemovie.com , a great movie snapshot quiz with a fantastic community, for being the catalyst which helped me discover there was so much more than summer blockbusters.
And of course to my co-bloggers Castaka and Asmodai, for being my best “internet friends”, which are two words I honestly never thought I would put together until I met them.
#insert hilariously apt movie quote here which I can’t think of right now…
Nearly forgot, you can find me on IRC in #whatthemovie on quakenet
